For Linda J. Brewer, litigation has always been more than a career—it’s a calling. From the moment she set foot in a courtroom as a high school student during a mock trial competition, the environment resonated with her on a fundamental level. The architecture of argument, the rigor of persuasion, and the palpable sense of purpose all felt like home. That formative experience set her on a path that would eventually lead to national recognition as one of the most respected figures in complex commercial litigation.
Today, Linda stands at the forefront of a legal practice defined by depth, diversity, and intellectual boldness. Her name has become synonymous with high-stakes strategy, cross-sector versatility, and principled advocacy. As the face of Exeleon Magazine’s 2025 Legal Experts to Follow issue, she represents more than just professional excellence—she embodies the evolving spirit of modern litigation.
A Purpose Born in the Courtroom
Linda’s fascination with advocacy began early, nurtured by high school debate and mock trial competitions that challenged her intellect and sharpened her instincts. But it was that first experience standing in a real courtroom that changed everything. “It was both exhilarating and inspiring,” she recalls. “That was the moment I knew.”
The attraction wasn’t just to the formality or process—it was to the power of legal advocacy itself. As she moved through college and law school, she became increasingly drawn to the possibility of using law to create meaningful outcomes for clients, communities, and the system at large.
“Litigation offers the perfect blend of intellectual rigor and real-world problem-solving,” Linda explains. “I’ve always been motivated by the opportunity to make a tangible impact—whether it’s helping a client resolve a legal dispute or standing up for principles of justice.”
A Broad Practice with a Strategic Edge
Unlike many litigators who specialize in narrow legal lanes, Linda embraces a generalist approach, allowing her to take on a wide variety of cases—from securities litigation to trade secrets, patent law, and antitrust disputes. For her, this diversity is energizing.
“One of the things I love most about my practice is being a generalist,” she says. “It means I never stop learning.” And in that breadth, she finds opportunity—bringing insights from one legal area into another, which often allows for creative strategies that stand out in litigation.
That creative edge has produced results. In one major antitrust case a decade ago, Linda filed a motion to dismiss based on the plaintiff’s lack of standing. At the time, the move was seen as unconventional—possibly too risky. “Others criticized the motion as a long shot,” she admits, “but it ultimately proved to be the decisive move that ended the case.”
It’s these kinds of bold, strategic decisions that have earned Linda her reputation: she doesn’t just practice law—she engineers outcomes.
Adapting to a New Era of Communication
The legal world is changing, and Linda is at the forefront of that transformation. One area she is particularly focused on is the evolution of communication technologies and how they affect discovery, data retention, and evidence preservation.
“When I first started my career, email was the primary mode of communication,” she explains. “Now we’re seeing businesses increasingly rely on instant messaging platforms like Slack, WhatsApp, and text messaging.”
This shift introduces new risks and responsibilities. These platforms often lack the archival capabilities of email and frequently employ encryption or self-deleting features. For litigation, that means evidence can vanish—intentionally or not—before lawyers ever have a chance to review it.
Linda notes that in trade secret cases, these technologies create especially thorny issues. “Inadequate security measures over important technological developments may weaken or impair a company’s ability to enforce its rights in court,” she says.
To mitigate those risks, she emphasizes the need for strong cybersecurity protocols, thoughtful communication policies, and updated legal training within organizations. She predicts the legal system will see major changes in laws around data security and electronic discovery in the coming years, with litigators playing a central role in helping companies adapt.
The Trial: Pressure, Purpose, and Presence
For Linda, no part of litigation is more rewarding—or more demanding—than trial. “Preparing for trial is my favorite phase of a case,” she shares. “The work is intense, but it’s also when everything finally comes together.”
Her approach to trial preparation balances analytical focus with human connection. Despite the high stakes, she maintains a philosophy that’s both pragmatic and personal: “Never lose your sense of humor,” she says. “Trials entail long days and high pressure, but maintaining some levity helps ensure you perform at your best.”
Linda is also deeply committed to mentorship during trial. Her firm has a unique program that ensures every trial team includes at least one associate who has yet to gain trial experience—offered at no cost to the client. “We believe firsthand trial exposure is essential for developing strong attorneys,” she explains.
In the courtroom, her focus is on clear communication and emotional resonance. She works to distill complex legal concepts into narratives that juries can understand and care about. “Establishing rapport with the jury is key to building trust,” she says. “It’s not just about the facts—it’s about making the jury feel a sense of responsibility in delivering a fair verdict.”
Advice for the Next Generation
For aspiring litigators, Linda’s message is clear: immerse yourself in the courtroom early and often. “Some lessons simply can’t be learned from a book,” she emphasizes.
As a law student, Linda externed for a federal judge in San Jose and later clerked in federal court in Oakland. These roles gave her a front-row seat to how attorneys at all skill levels perform in real-world situations. She urges young lawyers to observe trials, hearings, and arguments—even if it means doing so on their own time.
“Watching different attorneys deliver an opening statement, present a closing argument, or handle tough questions from a judge—those are formative experiences,” she says. “Seeing a variety of approaches helps you find what works best for you.”
For many, the courtroom can seem intimidating at first. But with exposure comes confidence. Linda insists that the more young attorneys see in action, the more ready they’ll feel when the opportunity comes to stand up and speak.
A Voice in the Legal Community
In addition to her courtroom and client work, Linda is an active voice in the legal community. She frequently speaks at national conferences, where she shares her perspectives on emerging legal trends, trial strategy, and thought leadership.
“These engagements are fulfilling,” she says. “They sharpen my practice and offer valuable opportunities to learn from others in the field.”
She believes that staying connected to broader industry conversations is essential for any litigator looking to remain relevant and innovative. Whether it’s adapting to new technologies, navigating regulatory changes, or rethinking traditional trial strategies, Linda sees thought leadership as a two-way exchange—both contributing and receiving.
Life Beyond the Law
Outside of her professional life, Linda J. Brewer finds balance in global exploration. A passionate traveler, she seeks out experiences that immerse her in ancient cultures and remote wildlife habitats.
Over the past two decades, she has traveled the globe—from visiting the Moai statues of Easter Island to trekking with gorillas in Rwanda, from watching lemurs in Madagascar to swimming with whale sharks in Australia’s Ningaloo Reef. Each journey, she says, is both invigorating and humbling.
“These experiences remind me that life extends far beyond the office,” she reflects. “Maintaining curiosity about the world is essential, no matter where you are in life.”
It’s that curiosity and sense of wonder that fuels her both inside and outside the courtroom.
Looking Forward: Milestones and Momentum
Having recently celebrated her 50th birthday, Linda is entering a reflective yet energizing chapter of life. She sees this milestone as a moment to take stock—not just of what she’s accomplished, but of what lies ahead.
One change she’s particularly inspired by is the growing representation of women in litigation. Early in her career, she was often one of the only women at the table during high-profile trials—especially in intellectual property cases.
“I vividly remember a judge pointing out that there was only one woman lawyer in a major patent case involving dozens of lawyers,” she says. “It was a stark reminder of the gender gap.”
Today, that landscape is changing. This year, Linda co-led an all-women trial team—an experience she describes as both empowering and deeply affirming. “It felt like a full-circle moment,” she reflects. “To be part of such a transformative shift is something I’ll always carry with me.”
As she continues to lead, teach, and try cases, Linda remains optimistic about the future of litigation. She believes the next generation of trial lawyers will be more diverse, more creative, and more equipped to face a legal world in constant motion.
And with her unwavering commitment to mentorship, innovation, and purpose-driven practice, Linda J. Brewer is not only helping shape that future—she’s lighting the path forward.
