Lazaros “Laz” Kalemis isn’t your typical payments industry executive. A first-generation Greek-American and two-time cancer survivor, his journey is rooted in resilience, gratitude, and grit. In 2000, from a modest apartment above his family’s pizza shop in Northeast Philadelphia, Laz co-founded what would become Simpay, with one goal – to give small businesses the same tools, respect, and transparency typically reserved for the big players.
From Humble Beginnings to a National Platform
What began as a payment processing company for local merchants has grown into a multi-faceted enterprise serving businesses across North America. Simpay’s Total Business Solutions platform now includes payment acceptance, payroll, HCM, POS systems, business insurance, and growth tools. Each tool is designed to simplify operations and drive revenue for small and mid-sized businesses.
Under Laz’s leadership, Simpay has earned a spot on Inc. Magazine’s list of fastest-growing companies nine times in a ten-year span. He was recognized as a Philadelphia 40 Under 40 honoree, inducted into the Philadelphia 100 CEO Hall of Fame as its youngest member, and received the SmartCEO Circle of Excellence award in Distinguished Leadership, along with being named a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
Leading With Vision and Values
Laz’s leadership style is plainspoken and people-first. Through the implementation of EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System), he redefined Simpay’s internal structure, aligning teams around clear goals and a shared purpose. He believes that by taking care of three key groups, clients, partners, and employees (or “Simpayans”), the business will thrive sustainably.
That belief has shaped initiatives like the Simpay Value Sharing Plan, which provides all qualified employees with a stake in the company’s success.
